With the amount of information you've provided it's impossible to offer a solution. We can't see your computer so we need to know the details of your problem and setup, i.e.:
Wow - re-read your post and think about how you would answer it
we need information to help
what versions of iPhoto and of the OS? What exactly happens when you launch iPhoto? Have you looked in the iPhoto trash? In the system trash?
The only sure answer is to restore your backup from before your son "pushed a button"

im not a computer person so i have no idea how to do the things you suggest.
How did you get to the pictures before the button was pushed? What exactly happens when you do that same thing now? What backups do you have?
thanks for the concern- but like I said I'm not good at computers. He some how signed in as a guest, so it wasn't showing the downloaded pictures.
if you sign into the guest account and import photos they are deleted (with a notice to you that all files are being deleted) when you log out

You may have transferred the photos while logged in as Guest. If so, they were deleted when you logged out of the Guest account. If they've also been deleted from the camera, there's really nothing you can do. There are ways to try to recover deleted files, but it's a job for professionals if you want good results, and their services are very expensive.
They were recovered when I signed back in not as a guest.
