Ipad 4 will not power on

I have tried a hard reset and now when attached to computer I get a message that the ipad is in recovery mode. When I try to recover I get an error 4014. I brought it to an apple store and they are trying to tell me it is the battery. I don't see how that could be. Itunes recognizes it and tries to update/reload the firmware. It is 59 days out of warranty. Any Suggestions?

Thank you for the reply. I have tried the above solutions. I have updated iTunes, however I have not updated my MacBook Pro to Mavericks. I wouldn't expect that to make a difference. I have also tried it on a Windows 7 machine with a fresh install of iTunes. I'm not getting any feedback from the ipad at all. I would assume it is completely dead, except for the fact that iTunes recognizes it when I plug it in.
