Safari 7.0.5 freeze on MacBook Air

I have a MacBook Air that is having problems with the latest Safari. I have Mavericks 10.9.4. It happens often that I am using Safari fine and then it will pause trying to load a site. The progress bar starts to move and then stops and never finishes. At that point I cannot quit Safari without the dreaded spinning pizza wheel of death. If I force quit Safari, I can but then I cannot Shut Down the MacBook. It blanks the screen but never turns off. So I have to manually turn it off. I have tried using Firefox but have not had this same error. I only have two extensions - Adblock and 1Password.

I have run Disk Utilities, Disk Warrior, cleaned out my Safari Cache. Nothing seems to keep it from reoccurring. It does not freeze each time I use Safari, just some times. Hard to pin down. I have my diagnostics report below. The last freeze was today at 20:36 - I live in Europe.

Thanks for any help and advice you can give.

Doug

You haev some form of cleaner app lurking:

/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.freemacsoft.appcleanerd.plist

(com.freemacsoft.appcleanerd)

No cleaner apps are needed--they don't do anything that OSX doesn't do anyway--and many destabilize the system.

/Library/PreferencePanes/OSXFUSE.prefPane

(com.github.osxfuse.OSXFUSEPrefPane)

That suggests you have FUSE anti-virus software. Same problems as with cleaners, but worse. The only real threat today is adware and most A/V programs won;t pick up adware,

I'd also try turning off Safari extensions. Often extensions break right after a new incremental Safari update. If that helps, see if the extension developers have an updated version.

I only have two extensions - Adblock and 1Password

AdBlock causes numerous problems with Safari as noted from the results an ASC search here.

Same for 1Password here.

Instead of using AdBlock, go to Safari > Preferences then select the Security tab then select: Block pop-up windows

For password management, use the pre installed Keychain Access utility located in Applications > Utilities.

Make sure: User names and passwords is selected in: Safari > Preferences > Autofill

Remove "Bluecoat" and see whether there's an improvement.

Any third-party software that doesn't install by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.

I never install system modifications myself, and (unless otherwise specified in this comment) I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.

Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.

Back up all data before making any changes.

You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.

If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.

WARNING: Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

Doug here again -

Thanks Allan, Carolyn, Linc for your great answers. I took out the 1Password extension since it was not so needed in Safari as it is also in my menu bar. I also removed OSX Fuse - it not an antivirus program but as it says, "OSXFUSE allows you to extend OS X’s native file handling capabilities via third-party file systems." I also took out the K9 Bluecoat. This one in particular makes sense as it checks the site to see if it has any improper material. I would suspect this hangs it.

I will try it and see how it goes. Time will tell. Thanks again.

Doug
