lost photos from iphone 5 backup

I purchased a iphone 5s and wanted to move the pictures from my iphone 5 to my computer. I was told to move them through itunes. I did that and it took quite a while to transfer since I had over 1000 photos. when attempting to find them on my computer and itunes they are no where to be found. There is a ipod photo cache but I believe that is only thumbnails. I also was surprisingly able to retrieve some from the i photo share and retreived some to the beginning of June. I need pics from april and may. Is there any help for me?
