Change photo dates based on file name

I've brought several gigs of photos into iPhoto (version 9.5.1, running on Mavericks) from PC. The dates shown in iPhoto are incorrect. But each file was named with the following convention:

20040228 - My First Game of Rugby

User uploaded file

The first 8 characters always follows the format YYYYMMDD.

Is there a way to change the photos' dates in iPhoto based on that 8-digit prefix?

Thanks!

Maybe I should have been clearer: I realize that there's nothing within iPhoto itself that will allow me to do this. I'm wondering if there would be a third-party application or a script that someone has developed that would do what I'm looking for.

And yes, I realize that 640x480 is small. That's all the camera we owned way-back-when was capable of.
