computer opens but the screen is not active
Exactly what does the display show?
Try SMC and PRAM resets:

It might be helpful if you indicated the EXACT model MBA that you have and the installed OSX>

Thanks for the response. I'm travelling and I have to wait to get in a reliable WiFi zone so any reply will be slow. The laptop is a Mac book air running OSX 10.8.5. This is one of these annoying intermittent problems. sometimes it takes 4 - 5 attempts to open the screen and now for the last few time it has opened first time!
The problem is that the desktop appears OK on startup and pointer moves around but nothing will activate. That is not even 'about this Mac' or the finder or anything on the dock. So I shut down and start again. I can't do any of the actions you suggest because nothing works!
This has been a good device at home and now I'm travelling for the next 7 weeks so it's frustrating.
