Now, what I want to do is erase everything and start again. I obtained the MacBook from a friend but the account/mac owner is her ex-husband. I don't feel comfortable asking her to talk to him so I thought it'd be easier to just wipe it and start from scratch.

I initially asked if I could boot it via FireWire using my MacBook Air (mid 2012) os x (10.9.4) but I couldn't do any of the things suggested. Hence my "delete it all for goodness sake" attitude. Hopefully someone out there can help me! I've tried creating another user but it's little padlock is closed so that options neutered as well.
