ANNOYING MACKEEPER TABS AND POPUP ADS

Hi there,

I bought a new macbook air 2 weeks ago, all has been well and good (new to mac products, always for android, still am).

Safari has also been good, as well as chrome, but as of recently, this whole "MacKeeper", "Zeobit.com" **** is completely taking over my search engines etc, problems including:

- Clean up mac ads everywhere, as well as the typical "Get a new iPhone 5' rubbish

- When clicking on links, my top sites tab shows up as well as the typical "MacKeeper" download page in another. I can only open links by pressing command to open in new tabs, however my top sites tab opens as well as the Mackeeper download page, along with it's fling annoying ads

- Ads as well before relevant google search links, like "Pages related to...." With zeobit.com on every inch of my ******* screen

Note that:

- I HAVE NOT downloaded anything to do with mackeeper, so uninstalling programs etc is unnecessary information - purely mackeeper tab and popup annoyances

- I have TRIED to 'restart' safari and remove cache, nothing works

- I have done the whole system preferences, privacy, remove all website data (which this zeobit.com **** is listed), and I remove zeobit.com but it just goes back on the list when I go through this process again

- Yes I have 'block popup ads' ticked

Can someone give me a solution to removing these popups with anything to do with zeobit.com and fling mackeeper which doesn't require me to read a long page of information? I'm about to smash my screen in here.

Thanks Thomas for the reply. I have a right click function on my mouse but that didn't work - it did work by clicking on "control"! That being said, my problem of pop-up ads hasn't gone away. I'm now on Firefox since I was on Chrome with the problem and when I hit reply to your post I was brought to a pop up that said I had to register first to get unlimited movies (like with many of the pop ups they come when I click on anything!). When I closed that box it then brought me back to be able to reply. The pop-ups are taking over! Never had this before on my mac 😟.

I will try your Adware Removal Guide back on Chrome since that's the browser I use most and let you know if it worked!

Thanks again,

Gale

That's probably because you have something other than Downlite, which is what Linc's instructions were for. Downlite is a common piece of adware these days, but there are many others covered by my guide and app. Hopefully, you'll have some success there. If not, not everything like this is caused by adware... could be a hacked wireless router, legit software that uses an ad-supported model or something else along these lines.

It looks like there are several people who have taken this route and successfully repaired their issue. I am wondering if there a real threat while doing this of losing music and/or photos? I do not have space on the cloud currently and don't honestly think there will be an issue with losing music or photos, but I wanted to check first.

Thank you for your time.

If you don't currently have any backups of your data, you should shut down your computer and should not use it again until you're ready to create backups. Your hard drive could die at any time, or there could be some other event that causes catastrophic data loss.

Further, note that "the cloud" is not an adequate backup. Syncing files to "the cloud" means that files that are lost also get removed from the cloud. That's not a backup. You need to get yourself at least one hard drive that is at least three times larger than the data you have to back up, then use Time Machine to back up to that drive. Then, you really should have a minimum of one other supplemental backup (or a "backup" backup, so to speak). This could be another hard drive, using something else for backups (such as Carbon Copy Cloner), or could be an online backup service (such as Carbonite or CrashPlan), or something along those lines.

If you don't go to the trouble and expense of getting a good backup system set up, it's only a matter of time before your data is all lost.

Anyone tried this with Yosemite? Had issues before on IOS 8 and had no clue how to be rid of it. I figured if I updated to the new operating system it might help but it did not. I tried using Linc Davis's directions however once I find the file I cant not drag it to trash without "duplicating the original files." Am I just doing it wrong or had it been revised directions for the new operating system?

I just updated to Yosemite yesterday. Right afterwards, I had this incessant mackeeper pop up. I'm not sure if the two instances are related, but following Linc Davis' advice, I was able to get rid of the annoying pop up. Also, I was able to drag those files into the trash without duplicating them. I'm assuming that you are doing it wrong or that there is something else wreaking havoc on your computer. I wish I could give you technical advice, but I'm not code savvy nor am I a computer programmer.

Hi Linc,

Thanks for the detailed steps outlined in your post. I tried clearing all the suggested lines using the triple click, right click, and reveal in finder method you described and all of them could not be found. I also uninstalled all extensions, restarted my computer and emptied my trash. I'm still having the issue though-am I missing something?

Sincerely,

A frustrated user

You probably have some other adware installed. There are many other kinds of adware besides Downlite (aka VSearch).

You can try my AdwareMedic app to find and remove any known adware automatically. Alternatively, if you're leery of downloading an unknown app recommended by a stranger in a forum (which is understandable), you could use the manual removal instructions in my Adware Removal Guide.
