Q: ANNOYING MACKEEPER TABS AND POPUP ADS

Hi there,

I bought a new macbook air 2 weeks ago, all has been well and good (new to mac products, always for android, still am).

Safari has also been good, as well as chrome, but as of recently, this whole "MacKeeper", "Zeobit.com" **** is completely taking over my search engines etc, problems including:

- Clean up mac ads everywhere, as well as the typical "Get a new iPhone 5' rubbish

- When clicking on links, my top sites tab shows up as well as the typical "MacKeeper" download page in another. I can only open links by pressing command to open in new tabs, however my top sites tab opens as well as the Mackeeper download page, along with it's fling annoying ads

- Ads as well before relevant google search links, like "Pages related to...." With zeobit.com on every inch of my ******* screen

Note that:

- I HAVE NOT downloaded anything to do with mackeeper, so uninstalling programs etc is unnecessary information - purely mackeeper tab and popup annoyances

- I have TRIED to 'restart' safari and remove cache, nothing works

- I have done the whole system preferences, privacy, remove all website data (which this zeobit.com **** is listed), and I remove zeobit.com but it just goes back on the list when I go through this process again

- Yes I have 'block popup ads' ticked

Can someone give me a solution to removing these popups with anything to do with zeobit.com and fling mackeeper which doesn't require me to read a long page of information? I'm about to smash my screen in here.

FireFox works for me and I never have these problems with it.  The only time this problem occurs is when I use Safari.

Then you have been very lucky. Most Adware infections give equal opportunity to Safari, Firefox and Google Chrome, usually in the form of and extension/add-on.

I do use script blockers and ad blockers in FireFox, maybe thats whats saving me.  But as an example:  two sites I was just on in FireFox 5 minutes ago with no problem I tried them with Safari 3 minutes ago and BAM ad injections, call this number bla bla bla you know the drill.  I don't mean to give the impression that I am bad mouthing Safari, in fact I sometimes find it preferable to use on certain sites I visit for readability.  But if i used it as my default browser I would spend an inordinate amount of time removing all the pop up ads and ad injections that it seems to be so susceptible to.  As a browser it just doesn't seem to work for me all the time, others may find it acceptable.

Those are generally ineffective with Adware Add-ons, but No-Script is effective at stopping java-script popups.

But as an example:  two sites I was just on in FireFox 5 minutes ago with no problem I tried them with Safari 3 minutes ago and BAM ad injections, call this number bla bla bla you know the drill.

No, actually I'm not sure I do know the drill. That doesn't sound like adware at all, rather more like the Tech Support scam that has become prevalent in the last couple of years. That's much different from Adware, but Adware can also be used to redirect you to sites that have been poisoned. Is this what you are seeing: Tech support scam pop-ups?

According to Rumors, there is a Safari update in the pipeline that will assist with this problem. See Dealing with Safari adware that won’t go away.

Yes, I guess they are the Tech Support scam pop-ups... I took them to be ad injection software.  As you can tell I'm not that savvy... anyway it's the scam pop-ups I'm always getting.  I do know enough that when I get redirected somewhere and it doesn't look of 'feel' right I get out quick.  Thank you for those links they were informative and helpful.  I use Ghostery in FireFox as well and will grab it for Safari too.  If they do get a fix for this in the new OS X I will definitely upgrade to it.  For whatever reason I've been sticking with 10.9...  thanks.

As MadMacs0 has said, there is nothing about Safari that makes it more vulnerable to these things than any other browser, and there is nothing about Safari in this regard that requires a "fix" from Apple. If you are having problems in one specific browser only, then that probably means you have installed some form of adware in the form of a browser extension. Such things exist for all of the major browsers.

So, if you're really having problems with Safari that are not occurring for the same sites in Firefox or Chrome, then you may have a bad browser extension installed in Safari. Open Safari's preferences window, click the Extensions icon, and look at the list of installed extensions. What are they?

    Dear Carolyn Samit,

I clicked the link that you suggested and downloaded the anti-malware tool. It worked straightaway. I think much easier than the route suggested by Linc Davis.

    Thanks!
