Q: ANNOYING MACKEEPER TABS AND POPUP ADS

Hi there,

I bought a new macbook air 2 weeks ago, all has been well and good (new to mac products, always for android, still am).

Safari has also been good, as well as chrome, but as of recently, this whole "MacKeeper", "Zeobit.com" **** is completely taking over my search engines etc, problems including:

- Clean up mac ads everywhere, as well as the typical "Get a new iPhone 5' rubbish

- When clicking on links, my top sites tab shows up as well as the typical "MacKeeper" download page in another. I can only open links by pressing command to open in new tabs, however my top sites tab opens as well as the Mackeeper download page, along with it's fling annoying ads

- Ads as well before relevant google search links, like "Pages related to...." With zeobit.com on every inch of my ******* screen

Note that:

- I HAVE NOT downloaded anything to do with mackeeper, so uninstalling programs etc is unnecessary information - purely mackeeper tab and popup annoyances

- I have TRIED to 'restart' safari and remove cache, nothing works

- I have done the whole system preferences, privacy, remove all website data (which this zeobit.com **** is listed), and I remove zeobit.com but it just goes back on the list when I go through this process again

- Yes I have 'block popup ads' ticked

Can someone give me a solution to removing these popups with anything to do with zeobit.com and fling mackeeper which doesn't require me to read a long page of information? I'm about to smash my screen in here.

    Hi Linc,

Thanks for the detailed steps outlined in your post. I tried clearing all the suggested lines using the triple click, right click, and reveal in finder method you described and all of them could not be found. I also uninstalled all extensions, restarted my computer and emptied my trash. I'm still having the issue though-am I missing something?

    Sincerely,

    A frustrated user

You probably have some other adware installed. There are many other kinds of adware besides Downlite (aka VSearch).

You can try my AdwareMedic app to find and remove any known adware automatically. Alternatively, if you're leery of downloading an unknown app recommended by a stranger in a forum (which is understandable), you could use the manual removal instructions in my Adware Removal Guide.

Thank you very much Linc Davis. You have solved a problem that has been on going for a very long time! Completely removed all pop ups and tab-opening issues. Very grateful!!!!!!!!

Use the AdwareMedic from Thomas Reed, which does much more than the complicated Linc Davis solution.

I'm in the same boat.  While the instructions may  be clear, they are not clear to me, as I don't understand the Reveal in Finder either.

    HELP.

Great Lex, AdwareMedic works ! No Mackeeper tabs and unwanted pages are generated in Chrome anymore

AdwareMedic found and removed completely other files as mentioned by Linc Davis.

The files mentioned by him were not present on my iMAC, but I still had the problem.

AdwareMedic completely solved the problem !

What extensions do you have in Safari?

Uninstall them all, except Adblock. Restart Safari.

    The issue should be gone.

Give me the list of the Safari extensions you have (or had) and I will advise which are innocent.

Lex, good news again; an iMAC restart solved the problem. I am browsing and searching intensively for half an hour and the ad tabs do not appear anymore. Apparently there was still something running in RAM.  I am using Chrome and had no extensions enabled in Safari

    Thanks for your reply
