Two masks in a group not working..

I'm having trouble masking out parts of an emitter.

I have two groups the first has video.

The second (which is above the video group) has an emitter and two bezier masks. I can only have one mask 'working' at a time.

Both masks are set to add for 'Mask Blend Mode'. Shape type is linear. Both have the mask invertered.

I'm new to motion so likely I've done something...

Any ideas?

Select one of the bezier masks and set the Mask Blend Mode to Intersect. If that doesn't solve the problem, go to the next one and do the same.
