iMac 12,2 running painfully slow

My iMac 12,2 is running so slow! I've tried everything that I can think of to fix the problem. I had Sophos antivirus, so I uninstalled it. I limited my login items. I've done a lot of drive clean up and organization too. Please help.

If necessary, I'll reinstall the OS (Mavericks) and install an SSD. I'm getting desperate.

First check to ensure all of your third party apps are up-to-date, this can be an issue. I also noticed you have a lot of third party apps installed including not only Parallels but VMWare Fusion, why? You also use Java which is problematic, unless this is critical to your work flow uninstall it.

After you have folowed the developers instructiosn for updating and uninstalling unneccessary apps restart your computer in Safe Mode, reset Disk Permisssions in Disk Utility (not a bad idea to do this 2-3 times) and then restart normally and test.

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.

For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.
