iTunes doesn't automatically transfer updated apps on synct

Scenario:

iPhone (iOS 7.1.2) app store shows apps to be updated.

Start iTunes, select Apps, updates, update all. Apps are downloaded to the iMac.

Connect phone to iTunes on iMac (osx 10.9.4; iTunes 11.2.2) - not set to launch on connect

Select iPhone in iTunes, synch. Updated apps are not automatically transferred to the iPhone.

Gripe 1. Why not?

Gripe 2. Why can't I at least select 'Update all' on the apps screen under the iPhone rather than having to scroll through the list and select any that are marked 'update'?

Gripe 3. If I update the apps on the phone, why do I sometimes get a cuss message that there are apps that have been updated on the phone - why am I not offered a link in that popup to the File-Devices-Transfer purchases?
