If your son can't remember what he changed the passcode to (or if it's showing the disabled screen) then follow the instructions on this page : iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled (you may have to put the iPad into recovery mode and reset the iPad back to factory defaults, and then restore/resync your content to it)
