My iTunes on macbook pro won't read my iPhone 5s

I have tried everything, reauthorize account, restart both devices, checked updates and settings but cannot figure out why my iTunes will not read my iPhone 5s. It suddenly just stopped reading it completely, the devices tab goes blank. My phone will only charge while connected to laptop. Any suggestions?
