Quark 9.5.4.1 not working with Mavericks-TEXT BOXES

When I select the text box tool, nothing happens. I try to draw a text box and nothing shows up. The "I" cursor does not show up either so I can't type in text.

I just bought QE 9 a few months ago. I recently updated to Quark 9.5.4.1 and I'm running Mavericks 10.9.4. I can't afford to update to version 10. Wasn't Quark supposed to fix Quark 9 so it was compatible with Mavericks?
