Airport express for airplay and iOS wifi sync

I am considering purchasing Airport Express to enable airplay between a mac and my stereo which I have read is possible without an internet connection. I also wondered whether my iPhone and iPad (both new models & current iOS) would be able to connect to this local network (no internet - just wifi) for wifi sync (automatic is preferable)?
