Problems with browsers slowing, and Chrome won't start up anymore.

Don't remember why, but I started using Chrome for Facebook. Then, I started having problems with Chrome slowing way down (scrolling really slowly) and getting "Flash Plug-in" error messages, so I started using Firefox instead. Then, Firefox started slowing way down and freezing. And now I can't get Chrome to start up at all. I tried downloading it over again, and that didn't help.

OS 10.8.5 on a late 2010 13-inch MacBook Air 1.86 GHz Intel Core Duo.

Do you leave your browsers open all the time? Try quitting every night and see if that helps.

Restart your computer at least once a week.

Download EtreCheck and paste results here for help troubleshooting. This will show extensions etc you have installed. We might be able to spot issues that are causing the slow downs.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Thank you, Diane.

I usually restart my computer several times a week, but thought I'd try again. Problem persisted. Then I logged into my administrative login, and Chrome worked fine there, and there were no problems with slow scrolling. So I initiated a restart from there, and when I returned to my regular account, everything seems to have been resolved. Not exactly sure why, but it reminds me of the joke about a car designed by Microsoft -- when it malfunctions, shut it off and hop out and get back in and try it again.

Thanks again for your reply.

John.

If you have two Users running at the same time, they are both using resources. I would log out of a User when you are finished.

Open Activity Monitor in Applications/Utilities.

Select Memory. Check Pageins and Pages outs.

Pageins or pageouts are how many times a page of memory is swapped out from disk to memory and vice versa. If the total pageouts is low compared to the number of pageins after having used your Mac for hours of work, you may have sufficient RAM. Otherwise, you should install more RAM.

Regarding your browsers. Do you use Tabs? If no, you should use tabs over windows.

How many tabs do you have open at once? Only keep tabs and windows open you need to access like your mail or a forum.

Try the Chrome extension, OneTab.

Whenever you find yourself with too many tabs, click the OneTab icon to convert all of your tabs into a list. When you need to access the tabs again, you can either restore them individually or all at once.

When your tabs are in the OneTab list, you will save up to 95% of memory because you will have reduced the number of tabs open in Google Chrome.

If you keep Activity Monitor open, you can quickly check to see what happens when you open and close tabs. Hopefully this will help you manage your browser use better.

Lastly, verify that Chrome is fully updated. I know it's supposed to auto update you, but sometimes it fails to work.
