Time Machine waiting to complete first backup forever

I attached a backup drive to my iMac (with Mavericks OS) that says "Waiting to complete first backup" in Time Machine and it always says that. I do have one backup drive that does actually backup correctly (and did its initial first backup okay).

I used to have two backup drives doing my backups through Time Machine, but one stopped working for some reason. Now, I'm just trying to get a second one to join my first drive in doing the backups. Why won't it complete its first backup? I have watched it and it starts running. It says it has 3 hours remaining, then it says 2 hours remaining, then I get busy and do other things around the house. I come back way later and it's done running, but I see "Waiting to complete first backup." I have tried many times to get it to complete. In Time Machine Preferences, I have selected Run Backup Now. I have also just waited a few days to see if it would ever run and complete. No such luck.

In case this makes a difference, when I had my two backup drives working in tandem in Time Machine, I had Mountain Lion. I now have Mavericks.

I need help, please.....

I found my TimeMachine was slow / failed because I had a FlashDrive loaded - silly me. It did not show up in Time Machine options, and while I noticed it I didn't think (enough) about it.

I had tried all the advice about repairing using Disk Utility, deleting .inprogress files, watching for the error using Console (possible time date stamp differences), unmounting EverNote so that it didn't load at startup (for some reason seems to be suspect), exiting my anti-virus, flashing my PRAMS & SMC, etc. I even brought a new drive and that was slow/failed as well.

Unmounting the Flashdrive sorted it. Silly me.

Mac OS X 10.5: Time Machine may display "Preparing" for a longer time

BTW, how is the drive formated? Open Disk Utility in Applications/Utilities to get this info.

Thanks for responding.

It doesn't say "Preparing..." for a long time. It does finish preparing, and then goes on to do the backup.

Also, I meant to say that it's a 3TB drive and 2.58TB remain so it's backed up something.

I don't know what to look for in the Disk Utility. It has a Partition Map Scheme of "GUID Partition Table." (The drive that does back up has a Partition Map Scheme of "Apple Partition Map.")

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.

In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the word "Starting" (without the quotes.) You should now see log messages with the words "Starting * backup," where * represents any of the words "automatic," "manual," or "standard."

Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Note the timestamp of the last "Starting" message that corresponds to the beginning of an an abnormal backup. Now

CLEAR THE WORD "Starting" FROM THE TEXT FIELD

so that all messages are showing, and scroll back in the log to the time you noted. Select the messages timestamped from then until the end of the backup, or the end of the log if that's not clear. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

☞ If all you see are messages that contain the word "Starting," you didn't clear the text field.

If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don't post many repetitions of the same message.

☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. Don't post more than is requested.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

It could just be taking forever. Time Machine will not run full force to backup while you are using the computer. Let it run overnight and see how much data is backed up in the AM.

Apple Partition Map should be OK. I like to do all my drives as GUID in case I want them to be bootable.

I apologize for my delayed response. I went on vacation for a few days!

I ended up discovering the problem myself. I had too many drives listed for backing up. I wasn't using them, but had left them there. After I removed the names of the drives I no longer use and just had the two I do use in the back up list. The initial backup to the newer drive completed. Now, both drives take turns backing up and all is well.

Thank you, Linc, for teaching me about how to look at the log. Thank you, dianeoforegon, for telling me about how to find the drive settings and which you like to use and why.

I, too, was stuck, for hours, with the "Waiting to Complete First Backup" message. I decided to try quitting any programs were open and saw that Safari and Evernote were the only ones running. I remembered once before receiving a message when re-starting my computer that "Evernote canceled the re-start." So, it seemed that maybe Evernote had a way of messing with things. So I quit Evernote, and my backup started up again and ran 'til it was finished.

Of course one incident doesn't prove anything. Maybe it was just a coincidence. But if Time Machine hangs again, I know what I am going to try first.

I have same issue. Here is a selection from Message Log (below)

It look like it is not connection to my Drobo; but I can access that just fine thru Finder. It was also working fine 2-3 days ago ... where I probably triggered this issue by having to shut down computer before a completed backup (no doubt I should have paused backup differently, but did not ....)
