Have run fixit programs like TuneupMyMac. They were no help. Sorry just a little perplexed.
The "fixit" programs maybe the cause of your trouble. A Mac does not get dirty and does not need cleaning. Cleaner apps will remove necessary caches and slow the Mac down, because these cached data need to be recreated over and over again, when you remove them, and the cleaners even may corrupt application data.

But to your current problem:
Do you have the beach ball problem only with GarageBand or also with other applications?
- If it is only GarageBand: Does GarageBand work well with a new project, or does it hang for all projects?
- If many applications are having the same problem, ask your question again in the Mac OS X v10.5 Leopard forum.
Do you have enough free disk space? How much free space do you have on your system drive and the drive with your GarageBand projects?m are your GarageBand projects on an external drive or on your system drive? If external, how is your drive connected?
In addition to the cleaner utilities, what else did you install recently? Any drivers for Audio interfaces, that might not be compatible? When did this problem with freezing start, and what happened directly before this?
