Under the file tab in itunes on my mac the devices are greyed out

I am trying to sync my ipod with my music in iTunes. Nothing happens when I connect my iPod to my computer. I clicked on the file tab and then devices. Everything in the drop down box is greyed out.

I have updated iTunes and reset my ipod.

Any ideas?

Hi maggiemuggins,

Make sure the sidebar is displaying in iTunes. For a Windows machine, CTL+S, for a Mac, View>Show Sidebar

Also make sure that under iTunes>Preferences>Devices, the "Prevent iPods, iPhones, and iPads from syncing automatically" is checked

Then hook up your device and see if it displays under the Devices section in the sidebar. If it does, click on it to display the Device Profile screens to the right, and then click on each profile screen to make sure they are set up the way you want them for syncing information to your device, then click "Apply" or "Sync".

If the device does not show up under the Devices section in the sidebar then follow the troubleshooting steps in this article:

or

Thanks for Thanks for the reply. I followed your instructions and I am

still not able to sync my iTunes to iPod. It may be the USB cable. The one

I am using is a new one or it may be I used a different iTunes ID when I

reset my iPod so now iTunes has a different ID that my Mac. Tried to fix

that problem but I can't find where on my iPod I can do that.

Cheers

Maggie

See

iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows

- I would start with

Removing and Reinstalling iTunes, QuickTime, and other software components for Windows XP

or

Removing and reinstalling iTunes and other software components for Windows Vista, Windows 7, or Windows 8

However, after your remove the Apple software components also remove the iCloud Control Panel via Windows Programs and Features app in the Window Control Panel. Then reinstall all the Apple software components

- Then do the other actions of:

iOS: Device not recognized in iTunes for Windows

paying special attention to item #5

- New cable and different USB port

- Run this and see if the results help with determine the cause
