I have a macbook pro and have had a couple of backups. Cant remember where. I am a novice and I have medical memory problems. I purchased an external storage unit from the apple store.I plug it in and hoped it would say back up now or something. But nothing. I have pop ups now and wanted to back up and then try to sort out the pesky pop ups. Can anyone help please?
You will first have to format the HDD in Disk Utility>Erase to Mac OS Extended (Journaled). Then I suggest that you set up Time Machine:

I think that worked.
However how do I ask it to back up?
If you're not automatically prompted to do so, open the Time Machine pane of System Preferences and specify it to be the backup drive.
