Black screen upon startup.

I have a 2009 macbook. The screen goes completely black after startup, like it's sleeping, and sometimes won't come on for hours. Sometimes it's as soon as I turn the computer on, other times it takes it about 5 minutes, but it turns off. I've done SMC and PRAM, I've turned all sleeping capabilities in energy saver, nothing seems to work. I even reinstalled Mavericks twice. Please help.

Open System Preferences > Energy Saver then click: Restore Defaults

And check the adapter > Apple Portables: Troubleshooting MagSafe adapters

I only changed the energy saving settings AFTER it starting turning black. It was set to default. If I let it go to sleep, I likely won't get it to wake up without a restart. Even then, the screen will go black.
