iPod sorts music by album artist instead of artist

When I want to view my music by artist, it sorts it by album artist instead, and the two do not always match. How can I change this? (Note: I have already tried just changing the album artist, and that doesn't help, because I have at least one album with multiple artists, and if I change the album artists, and try to view music sorted by album, I get one album for each artist, and I do not want that either.)
