IPad turned off during IOS update

My son turned off our iPAD 3rd gen during the IOS update. Now it won't restart. It just shows a blue circle with iTunes in it and a picture of a connector cable. I've tried holding down both buttons to reset it several times. Nothing works. What can I do?
