Why does each photo have four different pixel count images?

iPhoto creates smaller versions for sharing and to speed up browsing. All versions are necessary.

You should find the following files in your iPhoto library:

• Most important, the original image files in the folder "Masters". These files will be used to derive any edited version from.
• Previews: These are jpeg images showing the edited versions. Previews are used to be able to access your iPhoto library from the Media Browser, for screensavers, etc.
• Thumbnails: The thumbnails are, what will be displayed in iPhoto's browser, when you are browsing albums, events,...
• Faces: Small sections of the photo showing the detected faces.

Where are you seeing these? If you are going into the library directly I strongly recommend tha thou stop - there is no reason to be in the library and it is dangerous - a simple human error can corrupt your library and cause data lose or even photo loss

There are NO user serviceable parts in the iPhoto library
