iPhoto creates smaller versions for sharing and to speed up browsing. All versions are necessary.

You should find the following files in your iPhoto library:

  • Most important, the original image files in the folder "Masters". These files will be used to derive any edited version from.
  • Previews: These are jpeg images showing the edited versions. Previews are used to be able to access your iPhoto library from the Media Browser, for screensavers, etc.
  • Thumbnails: The thumbnails are, what will be displayed in iPhoto's browser, when you are browsing albums, events,...
  • Faces: Small sections of the photo showing the detected faces.
