For past few days my mac has been running extremely slow and I've been getting constant pop-ups and diverted advertising and phising pages. How can I stop these?

My Mac is OS X Version 10.7.5
Processor 2.4 GHz Intel Core i5
Memory 8 GB 1333 MHz DDR3
From what I know only less than 1/3rd of the memory is in use.
