Can Apple TV get around the subtitle problem with certain TVs and Netflix?

Can Apple TV (and AirPlay) get around the subtitle problem with my 3D Panasonic TV?

Netflix KNOWS about this problem, as per publications listing the various TVs that subtitles are not shown. The Panasonic TV has its own LAN, and communicates with my AirPort Express. My question is about investing in Apple TV and AirPlay to possibly solve the subtitle problem. For TWC movies and from BlueRay DVDs the TV handles subtitles nicely. It is just Netflix, and I'm wondering if there's a work-around.

See if Airplay keeps the subtitles when you work around Apple's limitations…

Install the demo of http://www.airserver.com

Start that on your Mac, send the Netfilx video to the Mac from the iPad, see if the subtitle settings are transfered to the Mac over Airplay.

It gives you an idea if the iPad is capable of sending the subtitles over Airplay. If you need it to be confirmed head to your nearest Apple store (or any store that has demo units).

Perhaps someone who owns an Apple TV will confirm - personally I think the ATV is terrible compared to the competition 🙂.

FWIW Netfilx claims their ATV app supports subtitles…

You would be better off direct streaming instead of juggling Airplay.

O'rly?

You didn't pick up the hint of desperation to try any solution from the title …

Or the original question itself?

He isn't here to fix his TV, he wants to get subtitles from Netfix onto the screen.

Richard Mcfarland, please correct me if I am wrong.

So even Airplay sends separate subtitle streams instead of rendering them?

I was under the impression subtitles are turned into images & sent in the video stream over HDMI. So either the Apple TV or the Netflix on ATV app should render them in?

It's described in the last paragraph of Audio/video

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDMI

Perhaps the TV is using a newer HDMI spec or I am just plain wrong 🙂
