After Install of Maverick Can't Open MS Word

What version of MS Office/Word do you have? Mavericks works with Office 2011 very well, but some users have had problems with Office 2008.

Run Font Book to validate your fonts. This has fixed some Office issues after updating.

How to use Font Book to validate fonts

1. Open Font Book in your Applications folder.

2. Select All Fonts.

3. Now click in the list of fonts and select all (Edit > Select All).

4. Under File in the Menu bar, select Validate Fonts.

5. Duplicate fonts will be marked with either the yellow badge or a black dot.

6. Select to remove or delete duplicates.*

7. Delete font caches

8. Restart your computer

* Step 6 – remove or delete duplicates is where the tricky part comes in. You can select to let Font Book disable or remove duplicates, but I’ve found that it removes the one you have not been using rather than selecting the best option. The next time you see this error, click on the more information button. Copy only the top portion of the report and paste it here.

Open word and be sure you have latest update from MS. 2011 is 14.4.3

Is Word opening for you, and are you able to create/edit a page? If you are, then Word should be ok, but if it will not allow you to create a page then there is a problem with the Word version.

Word from 2008 is fine on my 10.9 system.

Make sure you have updated so Word says it is version 12.3.6 ('Get info' on Word from the Finder to see the version)

You will need to dig around on MS's site to find the updates

Those are the files I used to update Office (the installer is the original disk - ignore that) - I also ran the MS auto updater afterwards, but I cannot recollect if it failed to work.

You're welcome. Microsoft doesn't make their downloads page easy to navigate. Too many ads for their new Office 365. They also moved all the Office 2008 updaters to old software making it hard to find.

The Microsoft AutoUpdater and Microsoft Error Reporting Tool (MERP) need to be updated as well. These are the same for Office 2008 and Office 2011.
