Sadly... another cry for help about a really slow MBP 13

We have three MBP13 in the fmaily and all of them are getting slower and slower. One only has 2GB of ram so I imagine the system has to go to disk way too often which doesn't help. But this one is a 2011 with no peripherals and no funky add-ons as well as 100GB of free space on the internal drive. I frequently repair permissions and empty the trash cans and try to keep everyone's account as clean as can be. There are 3 daily users and 2 infrequent ones (off to college most of the time).

I read many of the similar threads and followed the recomendation to use EtreCheck to start a debugging process. Here are the results in the hope that one of you kind hearted experts might help me bring this poor thing back to health.

Thank you very much in advance for any help.

Bo

Please describe the problem in as much relevant detail as possible. The "etrecheck" fad hasn't made that step any less necessary. The better your description, the better the chance of a solution.

For example, if the computer is slow, which specific actions are slow? Is it slow all the time, or only sometimes? When did it start to be slow? Did you change anything just before it started? Have you seen any alerts or error messages? Have you done anything to try to fix it? Most importantly, do you have a current backup of all data? If the answer to the last question is "no," back up now. Ask if you need guidance. Do nothing else until you have a backup.

THank you very much Linc for your reply.

FIrst of all, I have an external hd permanently connected for Time Machine. (except when debugging). So yes I do have a backup.

THe slowness affects everything and has been coming on gradually ever since we bought it new. No one event made it worse. I have been updating the OS whenever one was available and no update made any significant difference With this speed issue.

Main things that are slow: opening apps (any of them), opening files, "fast" user switching, closing apps, Internet browsing, everything really. Restarting the computer, repairing permission, keeping at least 100 gb free on the internal, nothing seems to improve matters. It will often take 20-30 seconds for "fast" user switching, opening Pages or Safari takes 20-25 seconds, quitting any app can take up to a minute.

THis machine is used mainly for my wife and kids Mail or Internet. Pages is probably the next most used. Nothing terribly processor hungry.

THere are 5 user accounts and one admin account. All seem to be just as slow.

No alerts or error messages of any kind.

I'm afraid that does not provide much help.... I tried to think of anything that would buck that lethargic trend but couldn't come up with anything unfortunately. it all just feels like the proc and the internal is getting tired. But this machine is only 3 years old. And we're not running Maya or Photoshop or Final Cut. Well, sometimes a little PS. But once a month at the most.

THank you for any suggestion.

Bo.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
