Importing photos from Time Machine to Maverick

The hard drive in my 7 year old iMac crashed. Rather than have it repaired I bought a new iMac yesterday. I didn't think I would have any issues as everything was backed up in my time machine. Unfortunately none of my documents are readable on the new computer. I was given a shortcut, converting all of them to Windows documents and then opening them with the new IWorks program. This is good for Pages and Numbers documents (though the work is time communing to do it for each one of seven years of documents, the real problem is importing my photos to the new Maverick from the time machine. It will not recognize any of the photos. Any suggestions? ThanksImporting
