iPhoto Won't Upload iPhone 5 Videos

iPhone 5 (not updated to new operating system because I have continuously heard that it is still full of bugs and kills battery quickly) will not even show up on iPhoto in devices. My photos upload via iCloud, but my videos do not connect. Grand and fantastic. Is this because my phone is not updated? Or because my MacBook Pro's OSX needs to be updated?
