After downloading iTunes 11.3 for Mac, I get the eternal beach ball

I get that beach ball and I can't do anything else. I restarted several times but no change. I connected iPod but it doesn't even appear. I have Mac OS-X 10.9.4. I need help! How do uninstall 11.3 and go back to the older version?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select

SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages

from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View ▹ Show Log List

from the menu bar at the top of the screen.Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.

The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.

Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.

Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Please read this whole message before doing anything.

This procedure is a test, not a solution. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.

Step 1

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is localized to your user account.

Enable guest logins* and log in as Guest. Don't use the Safari-only “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac.”

While logged in as Guest, you won’t have access to any of your documents or settings. Applications will behave as if you were running them for the first time. Don’t be alarmed by this behavior; it’s normal. If you need any passwords or other personal data in order to complete the test, memorize, print, or write them down before you begin.

Test while logged in as Guest. Same problem?

After testing, log out of the guest account and, in your own account, disable it if you wish. Any files you created in the guest account will be deleted automatically when you log out of it.

*Note: If you’ve activated “Find My Mac” or FileVault, then you can’t enable the Guest account. The “Guest User” login created by “Find My Mac” is not the same. Create a new account in which to test, and delete it, including its home folder, after testing.

Step 2

The purpose of this step is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party system modifications that load automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.

Please take this step regardless of the results of Step 1.

Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.

Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.

Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.

The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.

Test while in safe mode. Same problem?

After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of Steps 1 and 2.

Hello.

Here are my results:

Step 1 - I was able to open iTunes without any problems. I downloaded several podcasts (as I use iPod exclusively for listening podcasts), both audio and video. No problem there. No eternal beach ball spinning mad.

Step 2 - I hoped I followed your instructions correctly. I held down shift key while turning on my computer. I released my finger when I saw the Apple logo and spinning gear. Then I logged in as myself. After typing my password, I held down shift key while clicking an arrow to log in. I opened iTunes and the eternal beach ball again. Yes, the same problem. I tried to re-start my computer and once again, I had to force quit iTunes.

Some point last night podcast episode randomly played. When I clicked to select a different episode, it didn't work and the beach ball again. And that was it. It never happened again.

What do to now? Thank you so much

Back up all data.

As a test, please move the iTunes library folder from the Music folder (or wherever you keep it in your home folder) to the Desktop. If you've moved the library folder to another volume, unmount the volume.

Quit and relaunch the application. It may prompt you to create a new library, or to select an existing one. Create a new one and import a few tracks. Test.

After testing, quit again and put the original library back where it was, replacing the test library. Post your results.

Since I finished Step 1 & 2 tasks, something strange started. I opened Macintosh HD to look for Library folder. Suddenly everything - that is, the menu window I had it open, all my files/folders/stuff on my desk top - disappeared.. Then about a second latter, they all came back. Now it keeps doing that. This is new. I don't know what's going on here. I keep losing whatever I had it open. So I keep on re-opening.

In any case, I created a new one and imported a few tracks. No problem listening/watching podcast episodes. No beach ball. I put the original library back. I thought all the folders would automatically appear in my library but that is not the case. I have to put podcast file folders back to my library manually. Once I have done that, I no longer have a problem.

Thank you so much for your help.

Dear Mr. Davis,

I am sure this is sound advice from you

but it will be extremely hard for me to figure out what it all means - not least because English and German menus and computer lingo are not the same and it seems at first glance way over my head.

I bought my first Apple 8 years ago (and threw Microsoft away) because I knew that lingo would never ever give me a chance. I haven't had to deal with it for ages until Apple started to decide that podcasts deserve stepchild status.

on Saturday I spent five hours on the phone with the German Apple help desk. The consultant did a nice general cleaning up job with my harddrive and heaven knows what else but had no idea that the mess-up of podcasts since update 11.3 was Apple's fault.

... and don't forget that this is the second major upset within less than 9 months and I am still naive enough to believe that therefore Apple should fix it and I should be spared to spend another batch of hours and hours (as I had to do in September last year) to make my podcasts usable again. And if I have to spend those hours then at least it shouldn't be in areas were I am pretty much illiterate.

If Apple by now is interested only in savvy customers - then that was it.

Did you know that their database now likes to suggest as substitute for podcasts pederasts? I feel pretty sure that that isn't accidental and therefore I conclude that iTunes Podcast section will soon follow the RSS-Reader into the abyss and one will have to try out all the apps (2 are already available) until one has found something remotely manageable.

My no more Apple inclination increases by the hour.

Like you, I have the same problem. The podcast refresh cycle is slow, choppy, and in some cases does not refresh certain podcasts. This is the second less than satisfactory iTunes update from Apple in recent history. A previous update had iTunes downloading back episodes of podcasts on its own. I have no coding experience, but am less than satisfied that updates may be pushed out before being vetted properly. I hope Apple is not getting sloppy.

hi incognito

on another thread shiva 53 had the solution for me - stay away from list view use MyPodcast view - mine by now has gone through two update commands without a hitch

PS: Even though MyPodcast view offers some nice extras and comes now in alphabetical order I still would be much happier, if the list view'd become operable again

another PS: why did nobody from Apple tell us this - from having received at least a dozen crash reports from me, the should have been aware of that simplest of simple at least temporary fixes, but no, even their help desk knew nothing of it

Good luck to you with shiva's simplest of simple complete geek-knowledge free remedies

Jul 15, 2014 5:11 AM in response to incognito1227

MyPodcast View is in alphabetical order now

it doesn't tell you the date of the file though, at least not at first glance and the same applies to size

OTOH if you switch to feed it shows you quite comfortably the whole cloud content without your having to delete them all to get back to your wanted ones. Just switch to the next button on the right of it (don't know what Folgen is in English and assume that Feed is the same;-)

Jul 31, 2014 6:01 PM in response to incognito1227

This isn't a fix, but I seem to have found a temporary workaround...

For me, this issue occurs when I open iTunes directly into Podcasts.

If you open iTunes and hold down CTRL-OPT-CMD, it will ask you if you want to continue without the plugins. Click continue. Switch to the Music view.

Then quit, re-open iTunes as you normally would and voilà. So far it works fine for me, even in the Podcasts section. If you quite, though, you have to re-do these operations in order to get it to work again. So make sure you switch to Music before you quit.

I hope this helps until a fix is distributed.
