Are messages on my iPhone saved in iCloud?

I'm trying to download the new iOS 7.1.2 on my iPhone 5. A message says the update cannot be installed because it requires 995 MB of storage. It's also says that I have to delete items in Usage Settings. I have 8.1 GB of messages on my phone. Will they be saved in iCloud if I delete them on my phone? Some are business related and potentially very important. I purchased 20 GB of additional storage as well.
