How do I get iPad Podscasts app to honor episode limits?

I have most of my podcasts in iOS 7 (iPad Mini Retina, latest iOS) limited to 5 episodes each, but the Podcasts app is ignoring the limit and keeping many more episodes. How do I make the Podcasts app honor its episode limit preference the way it did in earlier versions? Thanks!

We're on to iOS 9 and this is still not "fixed".

Under "Unplayed" for example, I get the "Most Recent X Episodes". These are set to download automatically. Perfect. However, under that I have "Older Episodes". These never seem to remain forever, along with "Played Episodes to be Deleted". Not entirely sure what that means.
