Serious question: What happens if my Mac isn't supported for a new OS?

Hi all, I'd like to know what happens when my Mac Mini mid 2011 is no longer supported by a new version of OSX? What happens if a security exploit is found in the version of OSX that my Mac Mini is running?

Apple typically continues to support earlier versions of OS X after a new version is released. For example, while Mavericks is the current OS X version, Apple released a Security Update for Lion on 6/30/14 and Lion was released 7/20/11. Your Mac Mini can run Mavericks (perhaps you already are), so it'll be a while before what it can run will drop off the back end of Apple support.
