How to add gridlines in macbook air?

I am doing sidewalk art and need a grid reference. I have tried using Pixlr and creating a new layer and copying a png of a grid over my picture but it's just not working. Also I don't have photoshop or photoshop elements and the only image software I have is sketchbook pro (which is not real helpful)

I have no idea what to do lol. I don't really know how to use my new macbook either (i'm switching from pc to mac which has been a long and confusing transition) so any help on anything is welcome.

I have a macbook air 10.9.4 and I'm a total noob so I can't give you a whole lot of info about it, however I'll try to answer any questions as best I can.
