I purchase a new iPad Mini with Retina, and it came with iWorks Apps free. I also have a 2yr old iMac - can i get the iWorks suite free on my iMac or do i need to pay for each of the Apps?
Not unless they'd normally be free on the Mac. There isn't any credit in the Mac App Store for having bought the iOS version of an application; the developer needs to create and maintain the two separately.

you can go to https://www.icloud.com and log in to the site using your apple id and password and you can access the iWork stuff for free
