Hi there Poppi Chulo,

I would recommend reviewing the information in the article below on how Photo Stream is used. Photo stream only holds a limited number of photos for a limited amount of time and is not a substitute for backing your photos up to your computer or iCloud. Once Photo Stream is enabled on your device, all new photos you take or import to those devices will automatically push to your photo stream.

How do I turn on My Photo Stream?

After you update your devices and set up your iCloud account, you can easily turn on My Photo Stream on any of your devices:

  • iOS devices: Go to Settings > iCloud > Photos (or Photo Stream in iOS 6), then turn on My Photo Stream.
  • Mac:
    1. Go to Apple () > System Preferences > iCloud.
    2. Select the checkbox for Photos (or Photo Stream).
    3. Click the Options button and make sure that My Photo Stream is selected
    4. Open the app that you want to use with Photo Stream (iPhoto or Aperture) and make sure that My Photo Stream is turned on in that app. You can also adjust your My Photo Stream settings in iPhoto or Aperture Preferences.
  • PC:
    1. Open the iCloud Control Panel for Windows and select the checkbox for Photos (or Photo Stream in iCloud Control Panel 2.x).
    2. Click the Options button and make sure that My Photo Stream is on and adjust the settings.
    3. Click Apply when you're done.

Does using My Photo Stream substitute for using iCloud Backup or iTunes to back up the photos in my Camera Roll?

No. Photos in My Photo Stream are saved on the iCloud server for 30 days. To save or back up these photos, you must copy them from My Photo Stream to your Camera Roll on your iOS device. You can then back up your Camera Roll using iCloud or iTunes.

When do photos upload to My Photo Stream?

When you turn on My Photo Stream on your devices, all new photos you take or import to those devices will automatically push to your photo stream.

  • iOS devices: New photos that you take automatically upload to your photo stream when you leave the Camera app and connect to Wi-Fi. My Photo Stream doesn't push photos over cellular connections.
  • Macs: Any new photos you import to iPhoto or Aperture automatically upload when you connect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Or you can change your iPhoto or Aperture preferences so that only photos you manually add to My Photo Stream upload.
  • PC with iCloud Control Panel 2.1 or later: Open a Windows Explorer window and, under Favorites, select iCloud Photos if you're using iCloud Control Panel 3.0 or later (or Photo Stream if you're using 2.1 to 2.1.3). Open My Photo Stream. Click the Add photos button. Select the photos to import to My Photo Stream, then click Open.
