DivX upgrade corrupted quicktime AVI playing ability

I recently upgraded my DivX player and converter, after doing this my Quicktime player stopped playing AVI files. which is probably a good 85% of my videos and movies which i cant get to reformat to Mp4, MPEG or any of the other formats that it will play. Anyone have this happen before or have an idea of how to fix. and yes i have already tried to uninstall all the DivX components and it didn't resolve the issue at all.

Was QT 7 closed while you did this? QT 7 initializes the codec list each time the player is opened. So if the player was open while you uninstalled the codecs, the the changes would not be recognized.

If you have the Perian package installed and had no previous codec conflict problems with the older DivX component, you might also try removing and reinstalling the Perian package. Some users have reported that DivX and Perian codec components may conflict with one another when installed in one relative order but not another. I.e., it appears the order in which codec components are initialized may or may not create problems.

Have you tried using the free HandBrake utility to convert your AVI files to MPEG-4/MPEG-4 AVC in MP4 and/or M4V file containers?

im not sure about a few of the details on what exactly happened during the install update. but i did try the perian install and it worked beautifully.

Open system codec apps like QT 7 re-initialize the codec list each time the app is opened. Therefore, when installing or removing codecs from your system's configuration package, it is essential that you close and re-open the app to ensure the app's current list of available codecs is up to date and accurate. In the case of having both DivX and Perian codecs installed simultaneously, a conflict can be generated when the DivX codec is installed over/after the Perian package. By re-installing the Perian codecs after installing/updating the DivX software you probably "fixed" the conflict by changing the order in which the DivX/Perian codecs are accessed. Most users recommend removal of DivX, XviD, 3ivx, and similar codec plug-ins to preclude conflicts altogether but other users prefer to keep the DivX encoder available and discovered the "Perian re-install" fix which they then reported heere for others to try. I normally transcode everything to Apple compatible compression formats to avoid such problem, removed the other third-party codecs and now just keep the Perian package installed for continued support. In any case, glad you were able to get around the problem.
