My ipod wont connect to new itunes update?

Im running 11.0.3.54 on windows 8 with an ipod touch. All my music was cleared when I updated the program, and since its just MP3 downloads I don't think I can ever get it back, but the problem here is my ipod, when connected via cable my laptop recognises it (makes the sounds, asks whether or not i should scan,shows it in my computer) but my devices in itunes are greyed out and I can't sync.

I need serious help with this, I've been through every step the usual guide on here says.
