My iphone5c is suddenly saying that I have 3,262 items in my inbox. How can I delete this false message?

My iphone 5c is suddenly saying I have 3,263 messages in my mail inbox. How can I delete? Edit, mark all does not work as the Trash will not highlight.

Press & hold power button & menu button down until you see Apple Logo

do not move red slider this will not delete your other data.

then wait and see if it,s ok.
