The effects are added to the clip but there are no parameters in the inspector. The effect does not show in the inspector at all. This is a new behavior. Have I inadvertently changed a setting somewhere?

It does show in the Video Animation dialog but it does not allow me to make adjustments there.
WWhat version are you using? Post a screen shot of timeline and inspector.
10.1.2 This screen shot was taken immediately following adding the unsharp mask. FCPX acknowledges the addition of the effect, the inspector does not.
Trash your preferences and reboot.
Any particular preference file? There are a number of them. All of them?

Load Option-Command when you launch the application,
That did it, thanks. BTW, it even showed the old occurrences of the effect that were installed before.
