Restart message after installing Mavericks

I walked away from my computer as it was installing Mavericks (updating from version 10.6, I think) and when I walked back, this message was on the screen. I restarted a few times, and the same thing keeps popping up. Any ideas how to fix this ... ideally, without losing all my data?
