Macair is stuck on the apple screen and has black boxes on them!

I upgraded my macair and it told me to restart my laptop which I did and then it said that it couldn't upgrade cause of some things on it and the message went away but it was just the grey screen so I manually turned it off then on again and when I turned it back on it's stuck on the apple page and there are black boxes with words in them.
