My 'non-internet' cellphone won't connect to Macbook Pro to upload pictures.

I have a simple Samsung phone (texting, camera, but no internet) that I am connecting to my MacBook Pro with the same USB cord that I charge with (so I don't need to replace it, it works fine). The phone screen says "connect to the PC" and the arrows move, but nothing comes of it. Do I have to have an internet using phone to upload my pics?
