Can photos be retrieved from broken hard drive?

Snow leopard. Tech support at Genius Bar

could not locate hdd and said it neededreplacement. Ugh.

Only by a professional data recovery service; these can charge hundreds or thousands of dollars.

Not to rub salt into the wounds, but didn't you use Time Machine or some other form of backing up your computer?

up until 2011 I used time machine but it stopped working and I never got around to fix or replace
