Iphone caching old smtp server address

My iPhone keeps trying to send outgoing email through an smtp server that I stopped using over a year ago! I deleted all old smtp servers, reset network settings and delete and then re added all mail accounts with new smtp server details but the problem remains.

does the iPhone cache smtp server addresses anywhere? Has anyone experienced the same problem?
