Trying to use a spanish sim. iPhone 4s

I Have paid for a new iPhone 4s as mine was broken. I currently spend most of my time out in spain. I purchased a spanish sim through orange.es but it is saying that it is not compatible with the phone. My SIM card with orange uk works fine. I thought the phones were unlocked. Can someone shed some light. Thanks
