10 gig of space avail on mini, not enough room for 4meg mp3

I've seen many questions similar to mine but haven't found a response that fits. On a 32 Gig mini with 7.1.2 (and using iTunes 1.2.2). I have everything set to manage manually, no syncing and have over 10 gig of free space according to the bar on the bottom of iTunes. All of the other usage sections (apps, videos etc) are at amounts that jive with what is actually there, and 'other' is only 2.5 gig. When I copy any media to the iPad they copy over but remain grayed out in iTunes and don't show up at all on the Mini when not connected. If I throw out a gig of recognized playable videos and mp3s then I can add back another gig of media but then at this point they load in grayed out again. The same thing happens no matter where I clear the space out from, photos, apps, etc. I can load up media as per the actual space that I'm told I have but it all is grayed out and not valid or playable, even if I don't fill it to near capacity. IOW, my total of used space, according to the iTunes bar, is a bit over 17 gigs and the over 10 gigs left makes sense, as a 32 gig has a usable capacity of 28.

It has nothing to do with clearing out to make more room for the files. Something else is the culprit here. What? : ) Is there a setting that's tripping me up? Not involving iCloud here at all, just local storage.

This has gone on for months. I have deleted all content and done restores and it always works fine for a while and then it starts doing it again, though not at the same point.

If I have nothing set to sync and only want to manually manage anything, why is this happening if I have 10.3 gigs free?

Thanks.

With an iOS device, the “Other” space in iTunes is used to store things like documents, settings, caches, and a few other important items. If you sync lots of documents to apps like GoodReader, DropCopy, or anything else that reads external files, your storage use can skyrocket. With iOS 5/6/7, you can see exactly which applications are taking up the most space. Just head to Settings > General > Usage, and tap the button labeled Show All Apps. The storage section will show you the app and how much storage space it is taking up. Tap on the app name to get a description of the additional storage space being used by the app’s documents and data. You can remove the storage-hogging application and all of its data directly from this screen, or manually remove the data by opening the app. Some applications, especially those designed by Apple, will allow you to remove stored data by swiping from left to right on the item to reveal a Delete button.

Hi Texas Mac Man,

No, as I said the issue isn't with "other" space, it's with what the iPad is telling me is "free" space.

I am able to load anything I want with this last (currently) 10.21 gig of free space except load in media from iTunes. When I do that the media shows as grayed out in the iPad in iTunes and doesn't exist when not connected to the computer.

Do you sync after making the selections of media?

They do not load until the sync process actually occurs they, just go into a will install state and if you then remove the device, it reverts the changes.

robdrage,

Weird, I posted a reply a few hours ago and now it's gone. ? Anyway thanks for your post. No, I don't hit sync after dragging the files over because it has worked for me without doing that. I just drag them into the mini's area on the left in iTunes and when I disconnect they're available to play. The one time I did sync on this device it dumped the iPad's media and copied over what was on my MBP, even though I had it set to only manage manually. So I've not gone there. I don't want my MBP and iPad to have the same library. Don't want to have them in sync. Just want to copy mp3s to the iPad Mini.

If I clear out 500 meg of space by deleting anything, apps, videos, documents, I can transfer 500 meg of media and then beyond that it goes into this phantom transfer mode where it says it's copying them over, they show up as grayed out in iTunes and when disconnected the device does not contain them, all with 10.2 (currently) of "free" space. Now, I can load up a full 10.2 gig of media and THEN it tells me it's full, not before. Naturally, though, these will be only loaded in this "phantom" sense. Perhaps it's worth noting that while all this is going on I can, directly into the iPad, download Podcasts and apps for days into these last gigs of space as well as fill it with images and they function as normal, as do mp3s that I download sites. But I can't put mp3s or videos from iTunes into that same allocation.
